Velocity Blunt 35 wheelset

Posted by Malcolm Borg

This is a rim I really like. It is 35mm wide (30mm internal width) and 590g. It is very stiff. Unfortunately it is not asymmetric which make it perfect but the symmetric extrusion does make it useful for builds with a dynamo front hub like this one.

I actually have been riding a set for a couple of years on my single speed 29er. I fitted 2.3" geax Gato tyres which I run tubeless. Setup was easy and while the wheels are not light I really dont care as I use them in winter when the main drag is the wind, cold and mud.

Of course if you are a heavy rider there is no better MTB rim. You can do XC on them, DH, enduro or whatever the latest niche is. But dont think these are restricted to MTB use only.

As the rims come in 26", 27.5"/650B or 622/29er size they have other uses. Tourists wanting to run wide tyres in a 650B wheelsize have rim that can handle whatever load they want to carry. Ride over any terrain.

This set has been built with a SP PD-8X dynamo hub and a DT Swiss 350 hub for the rear.

If you want a robust tubeless compatible rim for touring (with wide tyres), MTB or expedition use then this is your rim. I actually think it is Velocities best rim.

First build with the DT Swiss RR411 DB (disc brake) rim

Posted by Bold Apps

DT Swiss have brought out a new rim. The RR411 DB. It is a disc brake rim for road/CX use. It is light with a claimed weight of 410g but these weighed 418g.

The rim is 21mm wide but 18mm internal width. I could be wider but it is also wide enough. The rim is asymmetric which I like. It is tubeless compatible but I have not tested tubeless tyres on the yet. So in short I think of this a lighter version of the BORG22 but not as wide (the weight loss ha to come from somewhere).

They built up very easily. These wheels are off to Ireland and the customer is getting Miche Syntium, DX hubs and sapim force spokes.

I do offer builds with these rims with a Miche, DT Swiss and Carbon Ti hubs. CX-ray spokes are offered mainly to keep the weight down. Weight for a complete (bare wheelset) starts at 1410g.

I reckon on a weight limit of 100kg for the rim.

One point the ERD of 601mm is with the supplied DT Swiss silver nipples. As I don't building with internal upside down nipples I use Sapim black alloy self locking nipples. These work just fine and the ERD with these is 597mm inc washers.

DT Swiss spoke nipple washers should be used though.
