The BORG50C rim brake-only wheelset is the perfect all-rounder. A wider aero rim (25mm at the brake track) provides a real aerodynamic benefit (it's like being on smooth roads vs rough tarmac) whilst being a robust spring/summer/autumn wheelset suitable for training or racing.
The rim profile provides good crosswind stability. Even though they are 50mm deep, you won't feel them to be more unstable than a 30mm deep alloy rim.
The rim is 19mm internal width, and the minimum tyre width is 25mm mounted and inflated (that is different to saying a 25mm tyre, as the real tyre width depends on the tyres bead to bead distance and the rim's internal width).
Campagnolo BR-BO500/BR-BO500X1 pads are the best for these rims. Baradine Cork 853 are cheaper, proven pads. Other pad brands are either untested or can cause some issues with excessive wear or overheating on descents. Every pad seems to be made with certain brake track resins in mind. What works well for one rim doesn't always mean it works well for another.
The spokes used are Sapim CX-ray, and black alloy nipples are used unless you ask for silver brass. A 20 spoke front wheel and 24 spoke rear is offered.
The rims are tubeless tyre compatible and will have tubeless tape fitted. The wheels are compatible with non tubeless tyres also. Tubeless valves will be supplied as well
The hubs uses are:
Miche Primato Syntesi in black. The front and rear hubs offer Shimano 8/9/10/11/12 speed. Campagnolo 9/10/11/12 speed and SRAM XDR 12 speed compatibility. The hub shell bearings are 6001C3 size so nice a reliable and run on a 12mm steel axle in the rear hubs and a 12mm alloy axle in the front. They also benefit from a simple construction, making them easy to service without needing specialist tools.
Catbon Ti hubs are very lightweight but also quite reliable. They are simple to service and are available with Shimano 8/9/10/11/12 speed, Campagnolo 9/10/11/12 speed and SRAM 12 speed freehubs. They use 6803 and 6903 shell bearings a 17mm axle.
Other hubs can be used but these are my favourites.
Highlights:
- 50mm deep
- 25mm wide
- 1660g for a pair of bare wheels with Miche hubs 1460g with Carbon Ti hubs
- 100/130mm OLD for matching dropouts
- These wheels are built to order.
