Road disc brake wheels they are the future you know

Posted by Malcolm Borg in 240, carbon, DT Swiss, sapim, straight pull, tubular

Well disc brakes are coming and about time. Disc brake for road bikes also make carbon rims a viable all year round option.

This build is with the best disc brake hubs on the market DT Swiss 240 straight pulls. They are a 28 spoke hub no lower spoke count on the front for disc brake wheels as the front takes more stick than the rear does when braking. The build is with carbon tubular rims 38mm deep with no brake track. Clinchers can be used in fact I have ordered a number of carbon clinchers without brake track for disc brake builds.

Wheelset weight is 1383g which fantastic for a disc brake build and the hubs have 100/135mm OLD. Of course being DT Swiss they are convertable to 15mm (front) and 12mm bolt thru axles which I expect will become the standard like it is on MTB's.

Ryde Pulse Comp disc wheel set on novatec hubs 1450g

Posted by Malcolm Borg

Ryde have released the first road disc brake only rim to the market. There is no brake track so I suppose track riders may like it. This is the first build I have done with them. The hubs picked are novatec D711/D712 hubs with a 11 speed freehub. The spokes are Sapim D-light and the rims are 32H. 3x lacing has been used of course and these are light at 1450g. The rims weigh 337g each.

The internal width of the rim is 15mm and it is tubeless compatible. The Cycle Clinic now stocks this rim and thesehubs. Contact us for further details.

Pacenti SL23 rims White Industries T11 hubs Sapim CX-ray spokes 1492g

Posted by Francis Borg

Pacenti SL23 rims are 445g rim that is 24mm wide (18.5mm internal width) 26mm deep and very stiff. This build is 20 spoke front and a 24 rear. The rim also does a respectable job of being aerodyamic due to its round rim profile.

The White Industries T11 hubs are light and they do look good. They are available in silver or pretty anodised colurs for a surcharge. This wheelset is £666 and my it is one I want to keep. Shame they are paid for and the customer wants them.

Ambrosio tubular Nemesis wheelset on Campagnolo Record hubs

Posted by Malcolm Borg

For a while now the pro peleton's choice for the spring bike destorying classic in Flanders has been the Ambrosio Nemesis rim althoug now a greater number of carbon rims are seen. This rim is 490g and is quite stif for a shallow rim. It's 21mm width helps here. It is a tubular rim because on cobble tubulars tyre are the best.

This wheelset is built using Campagnolo record hubs, and black Sapim Race spokes as was shipped to a rider in the armed force in Germany who will be riding Tour of Flanders and Paris Roubaix (as an amateur though). It is also my choice of rim for RVV. It is even a stiff wheel set.

H Plus Archetype rims Grey on Royce hubs

Posted by Malcolm Borg

There is another rider in Suffolk who thinks like me and he has the wheels I want!

I built him Grey Archetype rims 28H on Royce hubs with silver Race spokes. Not the lightest wheels that have ever been built they are one of the prettiest. Royce hubs are hub for life. They have titaium freehub, stainless steel axles, big 6001 NTN cartridge bearings. Simply they are the best hubs in production but they come in silver only but what wrong which that look at that finish they have.
