Another wheel set built and this one is using up stock of the out of production RR415 rim. DT Swiss have replaced it with the heavier than stiffer RR440.
The RR415 is a 415g that has a hard tension limit of 1100N, this is O.K as I have a spoke tension gauge. The hub are the rather perfect Dura Ace 9000. If there anything better? The rims and hubs are laced with Sapim Laser spokes and black alloy nipples. Given the front is 28 spoke and the rear is 32 spoke the weight of this wheelset is only 1537g (690g front and 847g rear).
The wheels are stiff too. It is a shame this rim is no longer in production at least it's replacement comes in 24H drilling though.
The ever popular H plus Archetype in black built on Miche hubs 24F/28R with Sapim Laser spokes (the rider is light). Brass nipples were used. I quote a weight of 1710g. The miche hubs work well with these rims as the are robust durable hubs that use a 12mm hollow steel axle and big 6001 main bearings. The flanges are thick as well. These are £70 hubs that last. They are 10/11 speed too or available with campagnolo freehubs
This is a wheelset I have built many of this year in fact it has been the most popular one I do. These were fitted with an ultegra cassette and Gator Skin 25mm tyres. If you extra's with your wheels just ask.
I do get ask to build with the Velocity A23, it is a light 450g rim, wide and not deep. It is tubeless ready, what not to like. Velocity also foa white version of this rim. The customer was very specific on this build, black hubs so Miche, white rims, red nipples, black spokes. Given his weight a 24F/28R with Sapim Laser all round I felt is appropriate.
Given the powercoating on the rims these are 15g heavier than normal A23's so wheelset weight is 1640g.
This is a very special wheelset. The Chris Kin R45 11 speed hubs are a improvement on the 10 speed hubs. The 10 speed hubs had the non drive side flange 34.6mm from the centre of the hub, tooo close in book. The NDS bracing angle is more important for lateral stiffness than the DS bracing angle, it is just the way the physics of structures works out. However the 11 speed hubs has the NDS flange 36.2mm from the centre as the DS flange has moved inboard by 2mm. This arrangement works better if using shallow rims and thin spokes. However this is not what has been done here.
So I coupled the gold R45 hubs to Velocity Deep V rims in 20F/24R spoke count. The spokes are Sapim Laser and the nipple gold Sapim alloy. A Laser spoke and alloy nipple weighs the same as a CX-ray spoke and alloy nipple but the Laser is stiffer.
The rim was picked because it is stiff which make up for the lack of spokes in this build. The wheels are for a light sub 75 kg customer so this low spoke count will work fine for him. The wheels are very stiff but they need to be as it reduces the ammount of unloading each spoke experiences during each revolution and that is important for low spoke count wheels less so for higher spoke count wheels.
The spoke lengths for the front are 271mm and the rear 279/277mm. These wheels are stiff and quite light.
Front 756g rear 907g.
Feast your eyes on these.
