38mm deep carbon tubular build 1260g!!!

Posted by Malcolm Borg in 11 speed, alloy nipples, carbon, Sapim, tubular

Well these are the lightest set of of wheels I have built yet and they are quite aerodynamic and stiff. Also they cost less than many factory options with sacrificing anything really. The build uses 38mm deep 20.5mm wide carbon tubular rims, Sapim CX-ray spokes and Miche Primato hub. Weight 1260g. If I used a lighter hub set they would be even lighter and I have some Miche Supertype 14 hubs 18F/24R on order from Miche so I can play. Cost £623

Road disc brakes are the future.

Posted by Francis Borg
disc brake for road bikes are definatley the future. So as my wife's birthday is today I though I would build her a bike that is as good as it gets. The frame is a OEM frame that is quite light at 1060g. The bike is built up with Shimano R785 hydraulic brakes/STI's with Di2. The routing is internal and ultegra 6870 is used. The wheels are built by my hand with DT swiss 240 straight pull 28 spoke hubs on 38mm carbon tubular rims with no brake track. The spokes are DT Swiss Competition and they have been laced 3x. Wheelset wight is under 1400g. The rotors uses are XTR 160mm front and rear. Pro Evo Stealth bars have been fitted. The tyres are Continental GP4000 tubular. Total weight of this rather spectacular setup is 7.6kg hardly heavy and cheaper than trek's new Domane with these brakes. I am sure the wheels I have built are superior as well. The tyre clearance on this frame is huge, 27mm tyres will fit no problem which means the next tubs might be Vittoria Pave's or Challange Roubaix.

HED rims now in stock

Posted by Malcolm Borg
HED Belgain C2 tubular rims 24H and 28H and the new Belgian + clincher rims are now in stock. The Belgian + rim is a 470g 25mm wide 25mm deep clincher perfect for wider tyres. I like the Vittoria Open Pave 27mm on these. Wider tyres are not slower if that what you are thinking far from it, in the bends I think they are faster. Also ride comfort is improved as the tyre takes a wider profile when compared to mounting it on a narrower rim. The Beligan + rim has arrived in 28H and 32H drillings for rim brakes 24H rims are on back order. The Cycle Clinic also has the NMSW version for disc brake builds in 28H drilling.

Dura Ace 9000 hubs on Pancenti SL23 rims

Posted by Malcolm Borg
You can hardly call these heavy at 1520g and the Pacenti SL23 rims is wide and stiff. The spokes in this build are Sapim CX-ray laced radial front and 2x rear. The hubs are the everlasting Dura Ace 9000 one of the best road hubs on the market. The wheels are very stiff meaning good power transfer but far more importantly the NDS rear spokes cannot go slack no matter how much power you put out. Rear wheels give problems if there is flex as flex fatigues spokes quite quickly.
So light and stiff kind of makes the perfect wheels and given the hubs are Dura Ace they will last a very long time indeed.

Road disc brake wheels they are the future you know

Posted by Malcolm Borg in 240, carbon, DT Swiss, sapim, straight pull, tubular

Well disc brakes are coming and about time. Disc brake for road bikes also make carbon rims a viable all year round option.

This build is with the best disc brake hubs on the market DT Swiss 240 straight pulls. They are a 28 spoke hub no lower spoke count on the front for disc brake wheels as the front takes more stick than the rear does when braking. The build is with carbon tubular rims 38mm deep with no brake track. Clinchers can be used in fact I have ordered a number of carbon clinchers without brake track for disc brake builds.

Wheelset weight is 1383g which fantastic for a disc brake build and the hubs have 100/135mm OLD. Of course being DT Swiss they are convertable to 15mm (front) and 12mm bolt thru axles which I expect will become the standard like it is on MTB's.
